Gardening

For me, gardening is a family heritage. I learned from my mother, who learned from her mother, who learned from her father, and I’m sure he learned from someone.
For all of us, our reasons for gardening are multiple. The practical satisfactions of growing good food are intertwined with enjoying the beauty of the garden itself and feeling in deep and right relationship with a particular patch of earth. My grandmother watched and mourned the disappearance of many species of songbirds that were common in her girlhood, and my mother and I now see gardening as a way to help preserve the diversity of life on an ever more stressed planet.
The links on this page provide information that may be helpful to other gardeners, especially in the greater Boston area. Simply put, my philosophy of gardening is earth-friendly and low-maintenance. I don’t put a lot of time into my gardens, and they certainly don’t look manicured. But they do, I believe, help make Arlington a better place for people, honeybees, and other living things.
